Inclusive access, seamlessly integrated at Bocconi University

A bespoke Stepless SLP E platform has transformed the heritage entrance at SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, creating dignified, independent access while preserving the architectural character of one of Europe’s leading centres for management and business education.

A university with an international outlook

Founded in 1902, Bocconi University is a leading European research and teaching institution with a strong international orientation. The urban campus in Milan brings together around 15,000 students representing 124 nationalities, with teaching and research spanning economics, management, finance, law, political science, data and computer science.

Building an inclusive culture

SDA Bocconi launched a programme to make its Milan facilities increasingly accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities. Guided by equal opportunity, sustainability and respect for diversity, the initiative set out to ensure that students, faculty, executive programme participants and visitors could experience the campus fully – without physical barriers limiting access to its spaces or educational services.

The work combined practical infrastructure improvements with a broader cultural commitment. Alongside upgrading the building's environment, as well as raising awareness among staff and strengthening its focus on diversity and inclusion, helping accessibility become part of everyday campus life rather than a stand-alone intervention.

A lift that blends into the architecture

A particular challenge was the heritage entrance, where a flight of seven steps formed part of the building’s established architectural expression. The solution had to create a reliable accessible route without compromising the character and visual coherence of the impressive entrance areas.

A bespoke Stepless SLP E platform lift provided the answer

Designed to be embedded directly into a flight of stairs, the lift functions as part of the staircase when not in use. When activated, the integrated section transforms into a platform lift, enabling wheelchair users and other people with reduced mobility to negotiate the level difference at the entrance.

Because the solution is built specifically for its setting, the surfaces and finishes are carefully coordinated with the surrounding steps. At Bocconi, the marble flooring was restored in accordance with instructions from the Milan Superintendency, preserving the historic character and architectural integrity of Via Sarfatti. This approach allows the installation to remain discreet within the heritage entrance while providing a permanent and intuitive accessibility solution.

Today, three Stepless solutions are already installed at key locations across the campus, transforming areas where accessibility was previously limited. In addition to the Stepless SLP E platform lift in the main entrance, the university has installed another bespoke platform lift providing access to classrooms on the lower level, as well as a Stepless LP7+ standard platform lift providing access to the stage in one of the university’s large auditoriums.

  • More to come

With a further three installations planned, the university continues to invest in creating an inclusive environment for everyone.
